In a recital at Gare du Nord, Basel on 16 November, the Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen will premiere Colin Matthews’ Three Fragments. Though a little over five minutes in total, these miniatures contain a breadth of sensitive and honest expression which Karttunen demonstrates artfully in his Youtube recording.
Dedicated to the memory of Oliver Knussen, the Three Fragments are part of a programme which pays tribute to late composer, featuring other works dedicated to him by his friends and colleagues, as well as Knussen’s own Eccentric Melody and the short, unpublished Tarantella (2002). Following the Basel performance, Three Fragments will receive its Finnish premiere on 28 November as the same programme is taken to the Savoy Theatre, Helsinki.
