2014 looks to be an exciting 40th year for Alexander L’Estrange. The African-inspired cantata for SATB chorus, unison children's choir and jazz quintet, Zimbe! Come sing the songs of Africa (2008) is continuing to galvanize community singing projects with over fifteen performances planned for 2014 so far.
The recently published Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose (2013) is also set to receive many performances over the year ahead. The energetic work for SATB chorus, unison children’s choir and 5-piece band was commissioned by the Portsmouth Festivities, in partnership with the Mary Rose Trust last year and celebrates the life, death and rebirth of this iconic ship through an exciting fusion of music from Tudor times, sea shanties and original music.
Performances of both Zimbe! and Ahoy! are taking place in some of the UK’s major cathedrals (St David’s Cathedral and Chelmsford Cathedral), public schools (Uppingham, Shrewsbury, Ardingly, Tonbridge and Magdalen College School), concert halls (Bristol’s Colston Hall and Snape Maltings) and will act as a catalyst for numerous community based events across the country. There’s even a performance taking place in Tennessee!
There are also plans afoot for the North American premiere of Ahoy!
