A new disc of BBC Philharmonic recordings of David Matthews’ music, titled A Vision of the Sea, is to be released by Signum Classics on 22 January. The orchestra, conducted by Jac van Steen, paints a symphonic portrait of the composer with Toward Sunrise, Symphony No.8, Sinfonia, A Vision of the Sea, demonstrating some of the best of Matthews’ extended orchestral writing.

BBC Philharmonic has an enduring relationship with Matthews’ music. Both Symphony No.8 and A Vision of the Sea on this disc were commissioned and premiered by the BBC Philharmonic; the latter as part of the 2013 BBC Proms.

The disc is already receiving positive reviews. John Quinn, MusicWeb International, writes, “David Matthews’ Eighth Symphony is a significant achievement and this magnificent performance by the BBC Philharmonic and Jac van Steen presents it in the best possible light.”
