This work was written out of sympathy for the violinist, who, like all performers, spends many hours practising on his or her own. It is, then, a duet in which violinist takes comfort in whistling or humming while playing in a somewhat improvisatory manner. The work is characterized by oscillating major seconds and harmonics, both of which are heard in the opening bars. The first performance of Alone was a memorable one. It was given by Ronald Woodcock at the opening of the LDS Auditorium, Nuku’alofa, Tonga, on August 27, 1976.
