‘Also on the same program was Peter Sculthorpe's Beethoven Variations. Drawing on the famous Ode to Joy theme from Beethoven's Ninth, the writing is characteristically polished. Whether in the tranquil opening that sounded the essence of pastoral calm, Mary-Anne Blades lithely stated flute line in the second movement or in downward rushing string glissandi, Sculthorpe's piece seems destined for a secure place in the repertoire.
He thoroughly deserved the ovation that greeted his appearance on stage after the work's conclusion.’
