These four short pieces for violin and piano are part of an on-going sequence of birthday presents for friends and colleagues. The Chaconne was written for the 85th birthday of Berthold Goldschmidt; Capriccioletto for John Carewe’s 65th birthday and Omaggio for Bayan Northcott’s 50th (the dates of composition show that it arrived rather late). The Moto Perpetuo was what is known (in my family, at least) as a half-birthday present, for Helen Carter on the occasion of Elliott Carter’s 80th.
