In 1916, Charles Chaplin signed a contract to produce twelve two-reelers for a company called Lone Star – Mutual. These twelve shorts, for the first time, gave Charlie complete artistic control and he produced twelve miniature masterpieces, acclaimed by Chaplin aficionados as his best work. The first was called The Floorwalker and was set in a large department store. The Tramp, played by Charlie, wanders in, browsing, and intervenes in a massive fraud that the Manager and the Floorwalker are perpetrating. The principal prop is an up-and-down escalator which provides Charlie with some of his most spectacular gags! As is traditional in these farces, the film ends with a complex chase involving Charlie, his crooked look-alike, the embezzling Manager, a lady detective and the cops!
