Greta Garbo is the femme fatale in this spy romance, set in Vienna just before the First World War. Garbo plays a Russian agent and the mistress of an Austrian spy-master. She tries to save her lover from execution after he is accused of treachery. Carl Davis's superb music evokes the style and spirit of pre-war Vienna, animating Garbo's seductive screen presence.
