Originally written in 1972 at the request of Vincent Ellin for a recital at the New England Conservatory in Boston, the present version is dedicated to the memory of Alan Stout (26 November 1932 – 1 February 2018), American composer, teacher and polymath, and a dear friend for fifty years.
 
The metamorphosis of the title is Kafka’s, on which many years ago I planned to base a big piece. This study was intended as a sort of ‘cartoon’ for the larger project, which never materialised…
