Reviews

‘Each score generates pleasure in its orchestration and fluency of movement but this new construct of five unbroken movements is testament to Vine’s talent for shifting between weighty and gossamer-light textures with engrossing skill and theatricality. This fresh-faced symphony takes its subtitle from Sherrington’s metaphor for the human brain, Vine focusing his (and our) attention on its activities and potentialities. Mind you, while listening to the piece in live performance, you tend to forget this illustrative backdrop as the composer presents a brilliant spectrum of timbres, throwing around melodic scraps and motives as the music moves from muddy, menacing bass work to effervescent sparks and broiling, full-bodied textural landscapes… it fascinates through its emotional sincerity and compelling craftsmanship… Significantly, Thursday night’s audience clearly approved of the piece, so here’s hoping it enjoys further performances.’
