Written for, and inspired by, the remarkable virtuosity of Roger Woodward – though actually left unheard for five years after its composition in 1981 – Anne Boyd’s Book of the Bells is a 20-minute tour de force in which the she attempts to ‘dispel time and all sense of its passing’. At times, as many as five strands of bell-like cantillation are spread across ten staves. A challenging, but remarkably beautiful addition to the repertoire.
