Capriccioletto & Omaggio for violin and piano were composed in 1998 and 1990-1993 respectively; together they last 6 minutes. Capriccioletto was written to mark the 65th birthday conductor John Carewe. A mercurial opening, with arpeggios and harmonics in the violin, gives way to a richer, more lyrical theme played with double stops. Omaggio is another birthday tribute (to Bayan Northcott) characterised by impassioned effusive writing, which grows more agitated in both instruments as it unfolds. They form a four-part sequence with Matthews’ 1988 works for violin and piano Chaconne with Chorale and Moto Perpetuo, and can be performed as a set.
