The score to Colin Matthews' Concerto for Cello No.2
Colin Matthews’ second concerto for cello was first performed by Mstislav Rostropovich in 1996, and conducted by Sir Colin Davis. Compared to his first concerto for the instrument, it is a sparer and more lyrical half-hour, especially in two songlike sections that make up its uninterrupted five-part structure. ‘It is mostly long notes’, said Rostropovich of the piece, ‘which allows you good time to have a feeling for each combination of harmony.’ Guttural brass fanfares and snaking woodwinds provide contrast in a thrilling central scherzo.
