John Woolrich’s 1999 Concerto for Orchestra was written for the 50th anniversary of the London Mozart Players. It is a celebration of “one of the glories of London’s musical life…the number, range and quality of its chamber orchestras”. Woolrich’s 19-minute piece is unlike a conventional concerto playing soloist off against instrumental group. Instead it displays the virtuosity of a large group playing as one. It is cast in a single movement, with introspective moments that are ultimately superseded by wilder and more raucous music, framed by an energetic opening and conclusion.
