Easter Orisons for chamber orchestra draws on material from Harvey’s church opera Passion and Resurrection. Premiered by the Northern Sinfonia and Steuart Bedford in 1984, it is characterised by gossamer strings and woodwinds, delicate and luminous in texture and mood. The second part of this 19-minute work sees an intensification in texture and feeling, suggestive of spiritual struggle and anguish, resolving into a peaceful chant. The Musical Times heard “lush chords and sonorities, ecstatic rhythmic energy… intricate birdsong-like arabesques and a primary-coloured approach to the orchestra.”
