This 14-minute brass quintet unfolds in one movement, a rough assemblage of musical shards and widgets. It begins and ends with solo horn, there are fragments of a tuba solo and chippings of chorales and fanfares for all five instruments The overall colouring is dark (the second trumpet doubles on its mellower cousin, the flugel horn) and the tonal palette is extended by a wide range of mutes, including straight, plunger, harmon, bucket and whispa.
