Malcolm Arnold’s Fantasy for Bassoon was commissioned by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for the Birmingham International Wind Competition. The 5-minute piece is unaccompanied and explores the bassoon’s wide range and instrumental colours. It is comprised of a series of contrasting sections, returning to a lyrical main theme between more playful, virtuosic episodes with rapid passagework.
