Jubilation was written in 1985 for the London Schools Symphony Orchestra and first performed at the Royal Festival Hall. The 10-minute concert opener makes use of extravagant orchestral forces, augmented by extra brass placed antiphonally, choirs of recorders, synthesizer, a children’s chorus, and sets of steel drums. Though the forces are huge, Jubilation reflects Benjamin’s instinct for transparency and meticulous approach to timbre and texture. Beginning with single claves before the audience has finished applauding the conductor’s entrance, the piece grows to a radiant climax and conclusion.
