This early piece from Harvey reveals quite a different side to the composer: bright, neoclassical, and different in style to his more mystical later works. Composed in 1961 it was first performed by the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by John Carewe in 1965; Harvey revised the 10-minute piece in 1998. This playful work, in one movement, draws on a concertante group of soloists who work with and sometimes against the string orchestra. The score is remarkable for its rhythmic vitality and motivic invention, especially showing the influence of Stravinsky.
