David Matthews’ Oboe Concerto was written in 1991 for Nicholas Daniel and the London Schools Symphony Orchestra. The 17-minute piece is cast in five movements – somewhat following the plan of his Symphony No.4 (1990) – each of which has its own distinctive orchestration allowing the delicate oboe line to shine. The first movement, punctuated by tolling bells, alternates faster passages for the soloist with lyrical interludes; a sunnier scherzo and trio follow. The slow movement features just oboe and strings, with recitative-like passages for the soloist; the bluesy fourth movement is inspired by pianist Arthur ‘Montana’ Taylor and proceeds a light, energetic finale.
“…an abundantly colourful score…”
