Prokofiev's Cello Sonata in C major, Op. 119, was composed in 1949. He was inspired to write a cello sonata when he attended a concert where Mstislav Rostropovich performed Nikolai Miaskovsky's Cello Sonata No. 2 in A minor the same year.
