Ralph Vaughan Williams’ String Quartet in G Minor was composed in 1908 and revised in 1921; it is amongst his pre-war masterpieces, cast in four movements and lasting 28 minutes. Modally inflected melodies, evocative of English folk music, sit alongside adventurous harmonies, the influence of his studies with Maurice Ravel. A lyrical, impassioned Allegro Moderato gives way to a playful Minuet; a sumptuous and searching Romance follows, proceeding a Rondo capriccioso, which sets triple- and duple-meters against each other. This product comprises the instrumental parts.
