Ralph Vaughan Williams’ String Quartet in G Minor was composed in 1908 and revised in 1921; it is amongst his pre-war masterpieces, cast in four movements and lasting 28 minutes. Modally inflected melodies, showing the longstanding influence of folk music, sit alongside adventurous harmonies born of his studies with Maurice Ravel. A lyrical, impassioned Allegro Moderato gives way to a playful Minuet; a sumptuous and searching Romance follows, proceeding a Rondo capriccioso, which sets triple- and duple-meters against each other.
