The score to David Matthews' String Quartet No.7.
David Matthews’ Seventh String Quartet was written in 1994. Like Schoenberg’s second quartet it incorporates vocal settings; the 18-minute work sets love poetry from E.E. Cummings, D.H. Lawrence, and the Song of Songs for tenor; the latter is drawn from Matthews’ oratorio Vespers. The introduction, marked appassionato, is purely instrumental, and returns as interludes between settings; a brief scherzo before the final song draws on material from the first two, before an intimate conclusion.
