The score to Malcolm Arnold’s Symphonic Study ‘Machines’

Malcolm Arnold was renowned for his film scores. This 1951 concert opener draws on material from Arnold’s 1948 music for a documentary about the British steel industry, Report on Steel. Arnold reworks the music into a propulsive 6-minute work for brass, percussion and strings, whose five variations conjure an energetic, industrial atmosphere from the outset.
