Peter Cornelius composed the Christmas Songs Op. 8 (for low voice) in 1856 in Thuringia. The first edition did not appear until fourteen years later, however, by which time Cornelius had rewritten the second and third songs. The present edition includes the first version of the two songs in the appendix. 

Dies ist die Ausgabe für tiefe Stimme von Peter Cornelius‘ wohl berühmtesten Liedkompositionen, die „Weihnachtslieder“ op. 8. Er komponierte sie im Jahr 1856 in Bernhardshütte. Die Weihnachtslieder hat Peter Cornelius seiner Schwester Elisabeth Schily gewidmet. Die vorliegende Ausgabe enthält auch die ersten Fassungen der beiden Lieder „Die Hirten“ und „Die Könige“ im Anhang.
